I was in charge of the redesign and rebuild of the website for Sulieti Fieme’a Burrows, an award-winning artist celebrated for her work with ngatu, the traditional decorated tapa cloth of Tonga. The goal was to breathe new life into her outdated site, showcase her most recent exhibitions and collaborations, and bring her artistry into the design itself through custom motifs inspired by her patterns.
I was the web designer and developer for this project, handling everything from the design direction to the final site build. It was a full-circle creative process, and one I enjoyed.
While Sulieti herself is the primary user, as she regularly shares her work online. The site also functions as a public-facing platform for people interested in contacting her about projects, collaborations, or workshops.
I started by reviewing the old site to identify pain points and gaps. Then, I created a new homepage mockup that restructured the layout, added breathing room, and prioritized her most recent work. A key part of the brief was to integrate Sulieti’s tapa patterns into the site design. I digitally extracted and enhanced her motifs in Photoshop and used them as subtle background elements and graphic accents throughout the site.
